What Is a UPS Battery?
A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) battery provides emergency backup power when the main power supply fails, protecting critical systems from data loss, equipment damage, and downtime. UPS batteries are the backbone of modern power protection infrastructure.
Types of UPS Batteries
VRLA AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat): The most common UPS battery type. Sealed, maintenance-free, spill-proof. Best for small to medium UPS systems (1–10 kVA). Typical lifespan: 4–7 years.
VRLA GEL: Uses silica-based gel electrolyte. Better deep discharge recovery than AGM. Ideal for longer backup time requirements. More expensive but longer life in cycling applications.
OPzV Tubular GEL: Premium choice for large UPS systems (10 kVA and above). Tubular plate design provides 1,200–1,500 cycles at 80% DoD. Best for data centers, hospitals, and industrial UPS applications.
Lithium-Ion (LiFePO4): Emerging in UPS applications. 3,000–5,000 cycle life. Higher upfront cost but lower TCO in long-term installations.
How to Size a UPS Battery
Runtime Formula:
Runtime (minutes) = (Battery Ah × Battery V × Inverter Efficiency) ÷ Load (W) × 60
Example: 48V UPS with 100Ah battery bank, 90% inverter efficiency, 5,000W load:
Runtime = (100 × 48 × 0.90) ÷ 5,000 × 60 = 52 minutes
Key UPS Battery Specifications
- Ah (Ampere-hours): Capacity — higher Ah = longer runtime
- Voltage: 12V monoblock or 2V cells for larger systems
- DoD (Depth of Discharge): Never discharge below 20% for UPS batteries
- Charging voltage: 2.25–2.30V per cell for float; 2.40V per cell for bulk
Applications Beyond Data Centers
- Industrial process protection and manufacturing
- Hospital and healthcare UPS systems
- Telecom tower backup power
- Financial trading systems
- Solar hybrid UPS systems
- Home and office power protection
Charging & Maintenance Best Practices
- Keep ambient temperature between 20–25°C
- Recharge UPS batteries every 3–6 months if stored
- Replace batteries when capacity drops below 80% of rated Ah
- Use proper charging: bulk charge at 2.40V/cell, float at 2.25V/cell
