What Is an OPzV Tubular GEL Battery?
OPzV stands for Ortsfest Pelzt Valve-Regulated — a premium type of valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery using a tubular positive plate design and GEL electrolyte. Unlike conventional flat-plate batteries, OPzV batteries feature vertical tubular spines providing superior active material retention, deeper discharge recovery, and significantly longer cycle life.
How the Tubular Plate Design Works
In a tubular battery, the positive plate consists of vertical polyester gauntlets (tubes) filled with active material, surrounding a lead-antimony alloy spine. This design prevents shedding of active material during deep cycling, provides consistent high-current performance over thousands of cycles, and resists corrosion better than flat-plate designs.
OPzV vs AGM vs Flooded Lead-Acid: Key Differences
The most significant advantage of OPzV batteries is their exceptional cycle life:
- OPzV tubular GEL: 1,200–1,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge
- AGM VRLA: 500–700 cycles at 80% DoD

Formula: Required Ah = (Daily Wh ÷ System Voltage ÷ DoD) × Days of Autonomy
Example: 5,000 Wh/day, 48V system, 2 days autonomy at 80% DoD:
